The 1972 Chevelle SS top engine was rated at 270 net hp (201 kW), conforming with GM's decree that all engines would be rated at their net engine ratings. All other engines on the SS roster were unchanged from 1971. 1972 was the last year for the cowl induction option for the 454 cid engine and was not even mentioned in the 1972 Chevelle brochure.
In 1966 it was the most powerful engine available in the Corvette, and between 1966 and 1969 was the most powerful engine available in full-sized models. In 1969 the L72 was available via a Central Office Production Order (COPO) in Chevrolet's intermediate ( Chevelle ) and pony car ( Camaro ).
This engine was superseded by the 409 cu in (6.7 L) as Chevrolet's top performing engine in 1961 and went out of production for cars at the end of that year. Current SS models are produced by the GM Performance Division.
As mentioned above, the Nova option could not officially have V8 engines at this time—the standard SS engine was the six-cylinder (this was also applicable to the Impala (and later the early Chevelle c. 1964–65) when the SS was a sport and appearance package)—but small-block V8 engine swaps were commonplace among enthusiasts.
