The Adjutant General (TAG) of Texas is the commander and chief executive officer of the Texas Military Department. The adjutant general's position of authority over Texas Military Forces is second only to the commander-in-chief, the Governor of Texas. This position is analogous to the United States Secretary of Defense.
Its main responsibilities are to control the Armed Forces of the United States. It is headed by the Secretary of Defense. The department was established in 1947 and is divided into three major Departments—the Department of the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as a number of other component organizations.
Exchange officers usually serve in similar roles to those that their career path would take if they were to remain in the armed forces of their home state.
