crash 1 had like four levels (the two bridge levels, sunset vista, and slippery climb) that were actually hard and this lead to a lot of the game having unbalanced difficulty. crash 4 on the other hand gets consistently harder and harder as the game goes on with the final world being a pretty rough time the first time through.
Yes, if we are talking about Crash Bandicoot 1 - 4. And the series' "pseudo-2.5D" (they are linear 3D games) is why it's probably the actual best translation of the platforming genre from 2D to 3D because of its focus on movement and jump precision.
Crash 4 is extremely well done and probably a comparably good "reboot-style" game, but DKC is just quite a bit better than Crash, and same goes for Tropical Freeze over Crash 4. Tropical Freeze is in the top 5 sidescrolling platformers of all time, IMO.

The character/world design is top notch in my opinion. Soundtrack is also amazing. Crash also had great spinoff games like Crash Team Racing and now Crash Team ...
Crash Bandicoot 4 is a true love letter to the original fans of the series who've continued to play those games over and over through the years. So as a result, they made Crash 4 the biggest, most-overstuffed-to-the-brim Crash game that's essentially designed in a way to be replayed over and over and over as years go on.
Crash of the Titans was a haphazard attempt at rebooting the series and ever since it's had a tenuous at best understanding or care of its own canon. Best course would probably be treating N San Trilogy + Nitro Fueled as a new canon and just moving on from there.
The bulk of fans from the PSX days were likely looking for the base game to at least peak at around Crash Bandicoot 2 levels. The fact that the base game spikes its difficulty so early on makes me worry that the mainstream crowd may have quit the game at the first quarter and gotten scared away from buying a sequel.
