I paid $500.00 for the Colt Detective Special in a private sale the other day. I'm sure its worth about what I paid for it but it would be nice to know if I got a good deal or not. I would rate the gun at 99% condition. It does not look like it has been fired much if at all. Unfortunately it did not come with the box or papers. Thanks in advance.
This is my first post here. I've found a Colt Detective Special .38, New in box, never fired, 99.99% condition if not 100%. Comes with original box. And I'm almost ready to snatch it up! What is this worth? I've seen used ones go start at ~$350 and NIB ones up at $699. I'm just wondering what I should expect to pay for one in 100% condition, NIB.
However, it is heavy. I am a Colt fan, always have been and always will be. So I have decided to purchase a second concealed carry handgun, a revolver, and like the Colt Agent, Cobra and Detective Special models. The Agent and Cobra are lightweight, 14 and 15 oz. respectivly, while the Detective comes in at 21 oz.
A 32 Colt is smaller in diameter than a 32 S&W. If the gun is chambered in 32 Colt, a 32 S&W will not go in the hole. If the shop does not have any 32 S&W or 32 S&W Long, these three cartridges can be used to check for size. NONE OF THESE are the correct cartridge. You should attempt to fire NONE OF THESE in that gun.
An acquaintance has enlisted my assistance to identify and quantify a Colt pistol he has. I have exhausted my limited ability to narrow down the particulars, but I know there are more knowledgeable folk in this forum. This is what is known about the pistol: Colt's Pt. F.a. co. HARTFORD CT . U. S. A. PAT'D AUG. 5. 1884 JUNE 5 1900 JULY 4 1905
Your date is right....#847674 was manufactured in 1964 and is what is known as the Detective Special Post War (2nd Issue). Value depends on condition. The Blue Book value (% = amount of original finish left): 98% - $650 95% - $375 90% - $275 80% - $250 70% - $200 Add 15% for nickel finish. Add 15% for square butt.
I noticed on 3 different used colt det spl's. that the bolt barely engages the cylinder notch. They were in perfect timing and locked up tight as a drum but the bolt engagement was only half what it shoukld have been. I also noticed this on one colt python. I didnt buy any of them.
What is the value of a Colt Detective Special serial number 396274, nickle plated, in original box with pamphlet (Colt special instructions on cleaning, etc),condition is excellent, appears to have been fired very little. Wood grips and nickle finish show no wear. 2 " barrel with 1/2 moon front sight. Manufactured circa 1930.
So called "Blue Book " values are often "way off" in both directions. Although, too high is likely more common than too low. If from Google or Yahoo, etc., you type in something like "firearm auctions" you will find two big or major Internet auctions for firearms. Go to either or both and search for "colt detective special".
