Located on Muharraq Island, adjacent to the capital Manama and the city of Muharraq, it serves as the hub for the national carrier Gulf Air. The airport is managed by the Bahrain Airport Company. Established in 1927, it is the Arabian Gulf's oldest international airport.
Muharraq Island (Arabic: جزيرة المحرق), formerly known as Moharek, [2] is the second largest island in the archipelago of Bahrain after Bahrain Island. It lies 4 km (2.5 mi) east of the capital, Manama , on Bahrain Island .

Muharraq (Arabic: المحرق, romanized: al-Muḥarraq) is Bahrain's third most populous city (after the capital Manama and Riffa) and served as its capital until 1932 when it was replaced by Manama. [2] [3] The population of Muharraq in 2020 was 263,373. The city is located on Muharraq Island.
