Malvern First Presbyterian Church before 1923. The area was originally settled in the 17th century by Welsh immigrants who purchased land from William Penn. [4]On the evening of September 20, 1777, near Malvern, General Charles Grey and nearly 5,000 British soldiers launched a surprise attack on a Patriot encampment, which became known as the Battle of Paoli.

The Great Valley forms a natural route to the west from the Philadelphia area. Both the Pennsylvania Turnpike and U.S. Route 202 follow the eastern portion of the valley. U.S. Route 30 enters the valley around Malvern and serves as the main thoroughfare in the valley as far west as Coatesville, where Pennsylvania Route 372 becomes the main road along the valley to its western end.
The current location of Immaculata University is in the Great Valley region of Chester County, Pennsylvania, near the Philadelphia Main Line community of Malvern, purchased by the sisters in 1906. The original 198-acre (0.80 km 2) plot has grown to 373 acres (1.51 km 2) since that time.
