Jacksonville is a city and the county seat of Morgan County, Illinois, United States.The population was 17,616 at the 2020 census, [5] down from 19,446 in 2010. [6] It is home to Illinois College, Illinois School for the Deaf, and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, and was formerly home to MacMurray College.

The Jacksonville, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of two counties in west central Illinois, anchored by the city of Jacksonville. As of the 2000 census, the μSA had a population of 42,153 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 40,090). [1]
In 1944, Rowe was appointed Illinois Secretary of State to fill a vacancy and then in 1946 was elected Illinois State Treasurer. His son was Harris Rowe who served in the Illinois House of Representatives. Rowe died in Jacksonville, Illinois on March 19, 1973. [1] [2] [3]
With a history dating back to 1830, the Jacksonville Journal-Courier is the "oldest continuously published newspaper in Illinois". [3]In addition to Jacksonville and South Jacksonville, the Jacksonville Journal-Courier circulates in Cass, Greene, Macoupin, Morgan, Brown, Pike and Scott counties, in western Central Illinois.
The Illinois School for the Deaf was established in 1839 by the Illinois Legislature for the education of hearing-impaired students. Aside from these two institutions, the majority of the district is residential and includes many of Jacksonville's most historically and architecturally significant homes.
Development in the district began in 1825, when Jacksonville was platted and the public square was created; the first buildings on the square were built the same year. Most of the buildings in the district were built between the 1840s and 1940s, and a large number were built during a late nineteenth century building boom.
