An adhesive label or sticky label is a small piece of paper designed to be affixed to any surface, [1] typically by the action of removing a layer of adhesive on the front or back of the label. Ray Stanton Avery (January 13, 1907 – December 12, 1997) was an American inventor, [1] most known for creating self-adhesive labels (modern stickers).Using a $100 loan from his then-fiancé Dorothy Durfee, and combining used machine parts with a saber saw, he created and patented the world's first self-adhesive (also called pressure sensitive) die-cut labeling machine.

The substrate side of the board contains a heat-activated adhesive that bonds the print to the substrate. This can be any of a number of board products or another sheet of laminate. The pouch containing the print, laminate, and substrate is passed through a set of heated rollers under pressure, ensuring that all adhesive layers bond to one another.
A release agent may be applied on the process rolls (like the yankee dryer) or in the paper coating. Some paper types are made with low surface energy release coatings: Release liners for pressure-sensitive adhesive laminates and tapes; Casting papers; General industrial release papers; Food-grade release and packaging papers
