The school was originally founded in 1909 by The Rev. George P. Mayo, an Episcopal clergyman, as the Blue Ridge Industrial School, a school for the rural mountain students in the region. The school opened in January 1910 as a coeducational vocational school with about 35 students; two students graduated at the first commencement in 1918.
In the 2018–2019 school year, Blue Ridge had 1,148 students [4] and 65 teachers. [5] Of those students, 89% were White, 4.2% were Hispanic, and 3.9% African-American, [4] 39.4% of students were deemed to be under the federal poverty line, 13.7% were receiving special education, and 16.4% were in gifted and talented programs.
