In 30 years the fair grew from a few dozen exhibits in the 1850s to over 1700 in 1876. The Aylmer fair also expanded from an afternoon show to a two-day event and membership to the Society has grown to over 200 members. It was not until 1865 that ladies' exhibitions were included in the fair.
Charles Symmes served on the board for the Aylmer Academy, was a member of the Aylmer municipal council from 1847 to 1851 and from 1852 to 1855. He later served as prefect for Ottawa County, secretary-treasurer for the county agricultural society, and revenue inspector for the district. Symmes married Hannah Ricker in 1824.
In the wake of the policy of regrouping the municipalities of Quebec, the villages of Aylmer, Lucerne and Deschênes were merged on January 1, 1975, to become the municipality of Aylmer. On 1 January 2002, it is itself attached to the municipality of Gatineau where Deschênes became a district with its own municipal councillor.
