A free trade area is the region encompassing a trade bloc whose member countries have signed a free trade agreement (FTA). Such agreements involve cooperation between at least two countries to reduce trade barriers, import quotas and tariffs, and to increase trade of goods and services with each other.
It was created on 12 August 1980 by the 1980 Montevideo Treaty, [1] [2] replacing the Latin American Free Trade Association (LAFTA/ALALC). Currently, it has 13 member countries, and any of the Latin American States may apply for accession.
The OED records the use of the phrase "free trade agreement" with reference to the Australian colonies as early as 1877.
