In August 1927, National Tongji University was established, and the original medicine, engineering branches were separately changed to medicine school and engineering school. In 1937, several additional colleges and schools were built, including colleges of Literature and sciences, and a law school.

Its predecessor was the Boji Medical School, which was founded in 1866, it was the earliest Western medical school in mainland China. Sun Yat-sen studied medicine here in 1886. After several adjustments, the school developed into Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences.

Medical education in Thailand was pioneered by King Chulalongkorn, who founded the country's first medical school called the "School of Medical Practitioners" at Siriraj Hospital in 1889, now the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. There are now 23 institutions offering medical programs nationwide, most of them public.
CUHK is a bilingual university; in general, courses are taught in English and/or Chinese. [2] The faculty remains to be one of the two medical faculties in Hong Kong, along with the older LKS Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. They are the only two tertiary institutions which offer medicine and pharmacy education in the city.
