Area code 870 was created in April 1997 to serve the most rural parts of the state (originally specifically not Little Rock metro, Fort Smith or Northwest Arkansas). In January 2002, area code 479 broke from 501, giving Fort Smith and Northwest Arkansas their own area code. The following three area codes serve Arkansas:
Area code 479 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for thirteen counties in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. The numbering plan area (NPA) includes the cities of Bentonville , Fayetteville , Fort Smith , Rogers , Siloam Springs and Springdale .
Due to Arkansas' relatively low population density, 501 remained the sole area code for the state until 1995, when area code 870 was created to serve north-central, northeast, eastern and southern Arkansas. In 2002, the northwestern part of the state, including Fort Smith and Fayetteville, was split off with area code 479.
Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits 0 and 1 in the leading position. [1] Area codes with two identical trailing digits are easily recognizable codes (ERC). NPAs with 9 in the second position are reserved for future format expansion.
Area code 327, per the Arkansas Public Service Commission, has been selected and is in the network preparation phase for relief as an all-service overlay code for the 870 numbering plan area [5] with a projected in-service date of February 20, 2024. Mandatory ten-digit dialing of area code 870 started on January 19, 2024.
