Many thousands of people make the walk to Mount Kosciuszko during the summer. It is 9 kilometres from Charlotte Pass, or 6 kilometres from the Thredbo chairlift. Camping is permitted anywhere in the park except within sight of a road or near a watercourse [citation needed]. The lighting of fires is severely restricted in higher altitudes. [8]
This straightforward walk starts from the top of the Thredbo Kosciuszko Express chairlift, which operates all year-round. The walking path is popular in summer, and is a mesh walkway to protect the native vegetation and prevent erosion.
To walk the whole trail can take between 3 and 8 weeks. Main Road 677 was declared along the eastern portion of Alpine Way, from Jindabyne to the eastern boundary of Kosciuszko National Park at Bullocks Flat, on 31 October 1997; [9] this was extended west along the remaining section of Alpine Way to the western boundary of Kosciuszko National Park east of Khancoban on 17 May 2004. Yesterday I walked from the top of the Kosciuszko Express chair lift at Thredbo to the summit of Mt. Kosciuszko. I assure you once you walk around/past the Eagles Nest building situated at the top of the lift, you can no longer see the village at any stage along the track that heads to the summit.
