The Wichita Falls metropolitan statistical area is a metropolitan area in North Texas that covers three counties – Archer, Clay, and Wichita. As of the 2010 census , the MSA had a population of 151,306 (though a July 1, 2011 estimate placed the population at 150,261).
On November 7, 1958, US 287 was rerouted in downtown Wichita Falls, and the FM 171 designation was extended along Lincoln Street to its current western terminus. The eastern terminus was extended to the south, first 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to a county road on May 2, 1962, and then 4.6 miles (7.4 km) to its current location at FM 2332 on June 1, 1965.
The highway was re-routed from Allendale Road to US 281/US 287 through Wichita Falls in 1998 with a bypass built around Holliday in 2005. US 82 was re-routed around Clarkesville in 2006, creating a concurrency with SH 37. The highway was re-routed south of Guthrie in 2007, with part of the former route becoming Spur 729. [4]
