Mason is a 5th Generation Oregonian. His ancestors, William and Thursa Cathey, arrived by covered wagon over the Oregon Trail in 1853. The Cathey family homesteaded 320 acres in what is now Gresham. William and Thursa Cathey attended the Yamhill County Fair in 1854, which was held in Lafayette, just a few miles from present-day McMinnville.
