Eugene Hugh Beaumont (February 16, 1910 – May 14, 1982) was an American actor. He was best known for his portrayal of Ward Cleaver on the television series Leave It to Beaver, originally broadcast from 1957 to 1963, and as private detective Michael Shayne in a series of low-budget crime films in 1946 and 1947.
Mathers was born in Los Angeles, California, and appeared under the name "Jimmy Mathers" in several TV and film productions between 1961 and 1968. His most memorable performance was in a 1964 episode of the TV comedy series Bewitched , when he played an introverted boy afraid to join the baseball team because of his overprotective mother.
Mathers served in the National Guard until 1969, by which point the Vietnam War was well underway. In fact, a bizarre rumor circulated that the actor was sent in country and died in the line of duty.
