White River Gardens is a botanical garden located at White River State Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. [4] Established in 1999, the gardens are managed and operated by the Indianapolis Zoo. [2] In 2021, White River Gardens' 3.3 acres (1.3 ha) was home to nearly 50,000 plants of more than 3,000 species. [3]

Its history can be read about in botanical and herbal publications, as well as literature pertaining to the history of the Calumet Region. The Indiana Botanic Gardens were founded in 1910 by horticulturalist and herbalist Joseph Meyer (1878–1950) in a small cottage in the rear of his home in Hammond, Indiana.
In 1970, the governments of Indianapolis and Marion County consolidated, expanding the city from 82 square miles (210 km 2) [3] to more than 360 square miles (930 km 2) overnight. As a result, Indianapolis has a unique urban-to-rural transect, ranging from dense urban neighborhoods, to suburban tract housing subdivisions, to rural villages. [4]
