Multi Tasking Staff Examination (also known as MTS Exam or MTSE) is an examination conducted by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit Group C (Non Gazetted, non Ministerial) staff to various posts in top ministries, departments and organisations of the Government of India. The Staff Selection Commission was established in 1975.
This stems from the practice that exams were traditionally given by 3 examiners. Each had to rate the student's examination performance on a 1–10 scale, and the final grade was the sum of the three ratings. On a 1–10 scale, passing is 6, so on a 1–30 scale the minimum passing grade is 3*6 = 18.
The question papers are distributed by the overseeing board of education, and their contents are guarded closely until the exam begins. The examinations may include multiple sets of question papers as well. The candidates are issued identification passes in advance, which are presented to the staff at the examination site.
