Smithville is located along Sugar Creek. [ 6 ] According to the United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 1.25 square miles (3.24 km 2 ), of which, 1.24 square miles (3.21 km 2 ) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km 2 ) is water.
It was built as an inn for travelers, on the south bank of the confluence of the Cumberland and Ohio rivers. It is built of 16 inches (0.41 m) thick brick walls. [2] Author Ned Buntline, who wrote about Buffalo Bill Cody and other Western stories, lived in the inn in 1845. [2]
