It is the oldest surviving neighborhood in Sacramento. The older Alkali Flat buildings and homes were built between 1853 and 1869 by the Sacramento's upper class.
Included within downtown is the California State Capitol building, the house of the California state government.The major retail and entertainment area is known as the Downtown Commons (DOCO), which includes Macy's, the Sawyer Hotel, Golden 1 Center (home of the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association), and a wide variety of dining establishments and retail shops.
Lavender Heights, Sacramento's gay and lesbian district, is centrally located on K Street and 20th Street. [8] [10] Lavender Heights is a name given to the hub of Sacramento's gay and lesbian community with many gay bars and restaurants.

Occupying an entire block between I and J Streets and 9th and 10th Streets in downtown Sacramento, Cesar Chavez Park and Plaza currently stands on Old City Plaza founded in 1849 by John Sutter. At one time, the California State Capitol Building was proposed for the location, but the idea was abandoned in 1857 after residents voiced concerns. [2]
