Although Eaton did not start Forest Lawn, he is credited as its "Founder" for his innovations of establishing the "memorial-park plan". He eliminated upright grave markers and brought in works by established artists. He was the first to open a funeral home on dedicated cemetery grounds. He was a firm believer in a joyous life after death. [1]
On February 29, 2008, John F. Long died of congestive heart disease at age 87. [1] His funeral was held at The Community Church of Joy in Glendale. [5] In 1954, a group of businessmen from Phoenix named Long Citizen of the Year. The U.S. Department of the Interior gave Long the Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service Award in 1980.
