Mungret then became a parish church (built 1251−72), operated by the Augustinian Canons Regular. The antiquary Austin Cooper wrote about Mungret in 1781. [8] Mungret Abbey church was used by the Church of Ireland until 1822. [9] The building was extended and the tower, the priest's living quarters, was added during the 15th century.

In 812 the Vikings sailed up the Shannon and pillaged the city, burned Mungret Abbey but were forced to flee when the Irish attacked and killed many of their number. Broad Street, John Street and Mungret Street are the main streets in the district. St. John's Square, a prized early Georgian development is located here as is St. John's Cathedral and the Milk Market which is located off Mungret Street. Irishtown is one of the oldest districts in Limerick dating from the Middle Ages.

The main primary school serving the area is St Paul's NS, though students in some estates in Dooradoyle are zoned to St Nessan's NS in nearby Mungret. The area is also home to St Gabriel's School, a special needs school, and Gaelscoil an Ráithín, an Irish-medium school. Dooradoyle is home to Crescent College, a comprehensive secondary school.
