The museum is located on the third floor of a four-story building, located near Kaba Aye Pagoda. [1] The Gems Mart at the Gems Museum consists of 82 stores on three floors, and sells high-quality raw and finished gem products, offering rubies, sapphires, pearls, jade and more. [2] The mart is open from 9 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Sunday.
The first collection of wild animals in Yangon began in 1882 in connection with Phayre's Museum, then situated at the present site of the Yangon General Hospital. Funded by a public donation of 240,000 kyats (approximately US$240,000 then) construction started at the present site near the Royal Lake (Kandawgyi Lake) in 1901.

Besides the older National Museum of Myanmar in Yangon, it is the second of the two national museums for Burmese art, history and culture in Myanmar. [1] The construction of the museum was started on 3 June 2010, and the museum was opened on 15 July 2015. [2] The museum is open from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, except on Mondays and public holidays.
The building has been vacant since the government was moved to the new capital Naypyidaw. The government debated whether to restore it and turn it into a hotel or museum. In 2011, amid national discussions on converting Yangon's colonial-era buildings to attract tourism, plans were made to convert the Ministers' Building into a museum, not a hotel.
