The original Vocal Band (called the New Gaither Vocal Band) was formed spontaneously, backstage of a Gaither Trio concert. Bill Gaither was born in Alexandria, Indiana, in 1936 to George and Lela Gaither.He formed his first group the Bill Gaither Trio (consisting of Bill, his sister Mary Ann (1945–2018), [1] and brother Danny Gaither (1938–2001) in 1956 while a college student at Anderson College, to which he had transferred after one year at Taylor University.
He also performs solo concerts. His first solo album was titled "A Man Like Me." Wes also appears and performs in the Gaither Homecoming video concert series, television series and cruises. Hampton's nineteen-year tenure ranks him the longest-serving member of the Gaither Vocal Band besides Bill Gaither himself.
For two years, while still traveling in music ministry with Barbi, Terry performed as part of the Gaither Vocal Band (1992 to 1994). Together, they opened for some of the Gaither concerts and sang at all the Praise Gatherings, Jubilates, and Family Fests during the 2 years.

Hall joined the Gaither Vocal Band as the new baritone in early 2004 [4] after an invitation from Bill Gaither that led to a one and a half month audition.
