Far from being the aged King Duncan of Shakespeare's play, the real King Duncan was a young man in 1034, and even at his death in 1040 his youthfulness is remarked upon. [11] Duncan's early reign was apparently uneventful. His later reign, in line with his description as "the man of many sorrows" in the Prophecy of Berchán, was not successful.
Shakespeare's source for the story is the account of Macbeth, King of Scotland, Macduff, and Duncan in Holinshed's Chronicles (1587), a history of England, Scotland, and Ireland familiar to Shakespeare and his contemporaries, although the events in the play differ extensively from the history of the real Macbeth.

Lord Macbeth, the Thane of Glamis and quickly the Thane of Cawdor, is the title character and main protagonist in William Shakespeare's Macbeth (c. 1603–1607). The character is loosely based on the historical king Macbeth of Scotland and is derived largely from the account in Holinshed's Chronicles (1577), a compilation of British history.
Joel Coen's 'The Tragedy of Macbeth,' with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, carves out its own space in the history of Shakespeare onscreen.
The king's madness is Shakespeare's own creation; the rest of the play follows Holinshed's Chronicles closely, such as the emphasis on Cordelia's love for her father. [3] The added dramatics, however, are what make the play an effective popular piece of culture. Macbeth – Holinshed's Chronicles retells the story of Duncan of Scotland and
