Jim Phillips is an American graphic artist known for his contributions to surf and skateboard culture. He is best known for creating the iconic Screaming Hand logo for Santa Cruz Cruz Skateboards, a design widely regarded as one of the most recognizable in skateboarding history.
The "Screaming Hand", designed by Jim Phillips Sr. in 1985, is the main graphic associated with the Santa Cruz brand. [7] The hand image has become a skateboarding icon and is recognized widely throughout the skateboarding community; in 2015–16, its 30th anniversary was celebrated with a touring exhibition. [ 8 ]
In 1979, he was sponsored by Santa Cruz Skateboards, turning professional alongside of teammates Duane Peters and Steve Alba. Later the same year Olson would receive the Skateboarder Of The Year award. [4] Among his contributions to the culture, Olson is credited with first introducing the skateboarding world to Punk rock music. [5]
