Thornhurst Township is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,012 at the 2020 census. [2] The area is a part of the Pocono Mountains region. The township was established in 1878 as Lehigh Township, so named for the Lehigh River.
Pinchot State Forest began a few years later, in 1902, with the purchase of 2,854 acres (1,155 ha) of land in Thornhurst Township, Lackawanna County, from William and Catherine McMurtry for $3,567.40. It was originally known as Lackawanna State Forest.
Lackawanna County is the second largest county in the Scranton–Wilkes-Barre–Hazleton, PA Metropolitan statistical area. It lies northwest of the Pocono Mountains approximately 40 miles (64 km) from the New Jersey border in Montague Township , and approximately 25 miles (40 km) from New York state in Kirkwood .
At the 2000 census there were 1,990 people, 767 households, and 589 families in the township. The population density was 95.6 inhabitants per square mile (36.9/km 2).There were 983 housing units at an average density of 47.2 units per square mile (18.2 units/km 2).
