Coming to the Bible with a historicist scheme of interpretation, Bible scholars began to study the time prophecies. Of special interest to many was the 1260 prophetic day time prophecy of Daniel 7:25. Many concluded that the end of the 1260-day prophecy initiated the "time of the end".
Daniel is the only book in the Hebrew Bible which gives names to angels. Gabriel may have received his because he "has the appearance of a man" (Hebrew gaber ); he appears here as a messenger and interpreter of God's message, the same role he was later given by the author of Luke 's annunciation scene ( Luke 1:19 , 26 ). There are two kinds of prophecy in the Bible. One is Classical (or typical) prophecy which commonly deals with immediate events or issues. An example of this is Belshazzar's feast. Daniel 5 tells how Belshazzar holds a great feast and a hand appears and prophetically writes on the wall that his kingdom will be given to the Medes and the Persians.

Daniel is episodic rather than linear: it has no plot as such. It does, however, have a structure. Chapters 2–7 form a chiasm, a literary figure in which elements mirror each other: chapter 2 is the counterpart of chapter 7, chapter 3 of chapter 6, and chapter 4 of chapter 5, with the second member of each pair advancing the first in some way.
