Haleakalā National Park is a national park of the United States located on the island of Maui, Hawaii.Named after Haleakalā, a dormant volcano within its boundaries, the park covers an area of 33,265 acres (52.0 sq mi; 134.6 km 2), [1] of which 24,719 acres (38.6 sq mi; 100.0 km 2) is a wilderness area. Early Hawaiians applied the name Haleakalā ("house of the sun") to the general mountain. Haleakalā is also the name of a peak on the southwestern edge of Kaupō Gap. In Hawaiian folklore, the depression (crater) at the summit of Haleakalā was home to the grandmother of the demigod Māui.
The ancient district of Kula. Kula roughly extends from Haleakala Highway (Hawaii Route 37) in the north to Keokea in the south—a distance of about 16 miles (26 km) around 20°47'32" N, 156°19'37" W.
