Isobel (Mia Kirshner) and Alaric talk at the Grill. Alaric asks Isobel why she left him to become a vampire and she says that is what she always wanted. Isobel wants to meet Elena (Nina Dobrev) and asks Alaric to arrange a meeting for her but he refuses to do it and leaves. Isobel follows him and attacks him at the parking lot.
Alaric originally comes to town to kill Damon, to avenge his wife. However, it was later revealed that his wife, Isobel Flemming, requested that Damon turn her into a vampire. Alaric then starts to become friends with Damon. Alaric owns a Gilbert Ring, which he obtained from Isobel, which prevents him from being killed by anything supernatural.
Elena calls Alaric, informing him of Damon's capture. Alaric immediately leaves to rescue him when he is caught off guard by Jo. Jo states that Alaric and her need to have a conversation. Alaric asks Jo to stay away from him for her own safety after telling her the truth about his species and the mission ahead of him.
Elena and Alaric become angry with John when Isobel's arrival devastates Jenna. Alaric is abducted by Maddox, a warlock from Klaus's inner circle. Meanwhile, Bonnie works with Jeremy and Damon to find the spell they need to gather the power of the witches killed in the massacre. Damon takes them to the site where the witches were burned.
Alaric, after returning, is adjusting to his life as a vampire and works as a professor at Whitmore. Stefan has decided to live a normal life and started working as a mechanic after giving up on finding a way to get Bonnie and Damon back. Elena asks Alaric how he copes with being a vampire and asks him to compel her into forgetting about Damon.
Alaric is brought back to life by the Gilbert ring. The two remain enemies but work together on occasion. Eventually, the two become best friends and drinking buddies. Even after Alaric is turned into a vampire who kills other vampires, Damon does his best to ensure that they do not have to kill him.
Damon does not like the plan and prefers to go with the original one where Bonnie will kill Klaus, but Elena does not agree. Alaric gets to the Salvatore house but Jenna does not believe that Alaric is really Alaric and holds a cross bow at him.
