CAS launched a national helpline in 2005, called Citizens Advice Direct, staff were based in Glasgow city centre. [ 1 ] In 2012 a study showed that most of CAS's activity was the provision of advice across five areas: benefits, debt, employment, housing and relationship. [ 2 ]
The Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Scottish Government, responsible for managing legal aid. It was established in April 1987, under the Legal Aid (Scotland) Act 1986, [1] taking over functions previously exercised by the Law Society. In 2006 it had an annual budget of approximately £164 million.
Many Advocates and trainee advocates carry out work for the Free Legal Services Unit (FLSU). This is part of the Faculty's long standing commitment to providing access to justice for everyone in society. The FLSU enables qualified persons to provide advice and representation to clients of accredited advice agencies (including CAS) across Scotland.

According to Shelter, [3] in 2019-20, 31,333 households were assessed as being homeless, which is a 4% increase on 2018-19. 51,365 people were in those households; 35,654 adults and 15,711 children. The number of households accepted as homeless or potentially homeless has increased by 25 per cent since 2000-2001 according to Shelter.
