As is the case in other Opuntia species, the green stems of this low-growing perennial cactus are flattened, and are formed of segments. Barbed bristles are found around the surfaces of the segments, and longer spines are sometimes present. [4] The flowers are yellow to gold in color, and are found along the margins of mature segments.

[2] It is native to North America, where it is widespread in Western Canada, the Great Plains, the central and Western United States, and Chihuahua in northern Mexico.
Opuntia macrorhiza is a common and widespread species of cactus with the common names plains pricklypear or prairie pricklypear or western pricklypear.It is found throughout the Great Plains of the United States, from Texas to Minnesota, and west into the Rocky Mountain states to New Mexico, Utah, and perhaps Idaho, with sporadic populations in the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys. This species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List. [1] However, a potential threat is one found in all members of the genus Opuntia – the cactus moth (Cactoblastis cactorum), [3] an invasive species that arrived to Florida in 1989 and has been a serious threat to the cacti in this genus all over North America. [3]
