Address geocoding, or simply geocoding, is the process of taking a text-based description of a location, such as an address or the name of a place, and returning geographic coordinates, frequently latitude/longitude pair, to identify a location on the Earth's surface. [1]
Since August 2015, Google Maps has supported plus codes in its search engine. [7] The shortened plus code is displayed for a location, may be copied , clicked, or transcribed, and can be entered into the address box (followed by the town or city name if not local and using shortened code) to display the location on the map.
The set of all geocodes used as unique identifiers of the cells of a full-coverage of the geographic surface (or any well-defined area like a country or the oceans), is a geocode system (also named geocode scheme). The full NAC system provides a third coordinate: altitude. This coordinate is the arctangent of the altitude, relative to the Earth's radius, and scaled so that the zero point (000...) is at the centre of the Earth, the midpoint (H00...) is the local radius of the geoid, i.e. the Earth's surface, and the endpoint (ZZZ...) is at infinity.

The GEOnet Names Server (GNS), sometimes also referred to in official documentation as Geographic Names Data [1] or geonames [2] in domain and email addresses, is a service that provides access to the United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency's (NGA) and the US Board on Geographic Names's (BGN) database of geographic feature names and locations for locations outside the US.
If the location is given as "0,0", search around the current position. A parenthetical can be used to indicate the label to show on the map. Google Maps adopts an unconventional approach to displaying the points: it shows the map for, but does not display a map pin, when a location is given in the standard way.
