The village had some miner's cottages at the 'Creepies', long since demolished. [ 3 ] Southfield, once the name of the whole settlement of 374 inhabitants in the 19th century, [ 5 ] is now the area of the settlement to the north of the A737, with a lodging house a surviving building that was a wash-house for the residents.
The station was opened on 21 July 1840 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway. [2] The station originally had two side platforms until the Dalry and North Johnstone Line was opened by the Glasgow and South Western Railway in 1905, when the station was remodeled with four platforms over two islands. [3]
