He was succeeded by his younger son, Raja Ibrahim, who reigned as Sultan Abu Syahid Shah (r. 1444–1446). Abu Syahid was a weak ruler and his administration was largely controlled by Raja Rokan, a cousin of his mother who stayed in the court of Malacca during his reign.

Sultan Idris first married, Raja Noor Izah binti Raja Ali. She was styled Raja Puan Besar until their divorce 14 years later. He then married his first cousin once removed Raja Muzwin, the daughter of Raja Ariff Shah bin Raja Harun, on 12 August 1943. Sultan Abdullah made a pact with the Dutch to attack the Portuguese in Melaka and retake the city, putting it under Malay rule. Laksamana Tun Abdul Jamil was chosen to lead the 1606 Johor expeditionary force against the Portuguese garrison in Melaka. The force comprised 50 war perahu and 3000 warrior.
