Before the 1920–21 season the university changed its name from North Carolina A&M to North Carolina State College. At that time the school's nickname was the "Tech." [10] That season the program joined the fledgling Southern Conference as a charter member. [11] State College changed its nickname yet again in 1923, this time to the "Red Terrors."
