Mount Rose Ski Tahoe (commonly known as Mount Rose) is a ski resort in Nevada, United States. The resort is situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains, near to Reno, Incline Village, and Lake Tahoe. Despite the name, the resort is actually on the slopes of Slide Mountain rather than Mount Rose, which is on the other side of Nevada State Route 431.
An extinct volcano, [6] the mountain is in between Lake Tahoe and Reno. [7] State Route 431 traverses Mount Rose Summit southeast of Mount Rose. [7] Due to the high elevation, most of the precipitation that falls on the mountain is snow. Slide Mountain dominates the Reno skyline, standing 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above the city just to the south of its larger neighbor Mount Rose. Several ski trails and a maintenance road lead to the summit, making the hike to the top an easy one, especially from the Mount Rose Summit Campground located on State Route 431 at the Northwest base.
The road has existed at least as far back as 1950 as an access to the ski areas of Mount Rose. At that time it was a dirt road only passable by automobile in the summer months. [3] Approximately 20 miles (32 km) of SR 431 was designated as the Mount Rose Nevada Scenic Byway by the Nevada Department of Transportation on June 27, 1996. [4]
