Based on similar reality dating game shows of the early 2000s like Blind Date and The 5th Wheel, Foursome gathers four singles, two men and two women, and bases them in a Los Angeles (and, in some later episodes, New York City or Miami) mansion for 24 hours.

Each member of the successful Britain and Ireland team from the 1957 Ryder Cup was paired with a Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire professional in the 72-hole foursomes event, played over two days.
The United States team had 12 players including a captain who participated in the event. The International team had 12 players plus a non-playing captain. On the first and second day four-ball was played in the morning and foursomes were played in the afternoon. On the third day only singles were played.
