Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (5 February 1840 – 24 November 1916) was an American-born British inventor best known as the creator of the first automatic machine gun, the Maxim gun. [1] Maxim held patents on numerous mechanical devices such as hair-curling irons , a mousetrap , and steam pumps .
Benjamin David Goodman (May 30, 1909 – June 13, 1986) was an American clarinetist and bandleader, known as the "King of Swing". His orchestra did phenomenally well commercially. From 1936 until the mid-1940s, Goodman led one of the most popular swing big bands in the United States.

Hundreds of styles of swing dancing were developed; those that have survived beyond that era include Charleston , Balboa , Lindy Hop , and Collegiate Shag .
