Independence of the Seas is a Freedom-class cruise ship operated by Royal Caribbean International. The 15-deck ship was built in the Aker Finnyards Turku Shipyard, Finland. At 154,407 GT, [4] she joined Freedom of the Seas and Liberty of the Seas as the largest cruise ships and passenger vessels when built.
A Freedom-class ship compared with other large structures. The Freedom-class ships are similar in design and layout to the earlier second-generation Voyager class, including an ice skating rink and a 136 m (446 ft) central atrium [1] named the Royal Promenade, featuring a pub, shops, arcades, bars, and a 24-hour Cafe Promenade.
The first large cruise ships were the Voyager-class from Royal Caribbean Group's Royal Caribbean International (RCI). These ships, which debuted in 1998 at over 137,000 GT, were almost 30,000 GT larger than the next-largest cruise ships, and were some of the first designed to offer amenities unrelated to cruising, such as an ice rink and climbing wall. [1]
The public spaces on decks five and seven were built with 1½ times the standard deck height, leading to deck 6 only existing in the forward part of the ship. [7] The Song of America would also be the first ship to have a Viking Crown lounge completely encircling the funnel, providing 360 degree views, and accessible by interior stairs and lifts.
Liberty of the Seas is a Royal Caribbean International Freedom-class cruise ship which entered regular service in May 2007. It was initially announced that she would be called Endeavour of the Seas; however, this name was later changed. [4] The 15-deck ship accommodates 3,634 passengers served by 1,360 crew.
The adults-only pool area is now enclosed and climate-controlled. It also has a new neighborhood: the Suite Neighborhood. The ship's buffet is located on Deck 15 aft rather than Deck 16 under the funnel and is the largest buffet in RCI's fleet. Other additions include a new playground and new food and drink venues. [27]
