The James Webb Space Telescope has revealed colorful new portraits of the iconic Ring Nebula. The new images capture the complex details of the planetary nebula, an enormous cloud of cosmic gas ...
In 1923, following the Great Debate, it became clear that many "nebulae" were in fact galaxies far from the Milky Way. Slipher and Edwin Hubble continued to collect the spectra from many different nebulae, finding 29 that showed emission spectra and 33 that had the continuous spectra of star light. [ 18 ]
A starchart of the Orion Nebula. Optical images reveal clouds of gas and dust in the Orion Nebula; an infrared image (right) reveals the new stars shining within. The entirety of the Orion Nebula extends across a 1° region of the sky, and includes neutral clouds of gas and dust, associations of stars, ionized volumes of gas, and reflection ...
This image, made by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope in 2013, shows Barnard 33, the Horsehead Nebula, in the constellation of Orion (the Hunter), in infrared light.
NGC 6326, a planetary nebula with glowing wisps of outpouring gas that are lit up by a binary [3] central star. A planetary nebula is a type of emission nebula consisting of an expanding, glowing shell of ionized gas ejected from red giant stars late in their lives. [4] The term "planetary nebula" is a misnomer because they are unrelated to ...

A Hubble Space Telescope composite picture of the Orion Nebula, the closest region of star formation to Earth. NASA's press release describes the nebula as "one of astronomy's most dramatic and photogenic celestial objects"; this image includes more than 3,000 stars of various sizes.
The nebula is visible as a hazy patch in a small telescope, while a larger aperture will show a pair of dark nebulae designated Barnard 1 and Barnard 2. [5] It is associated with a dark cloud L1450 (Barnard 205). Estimates of the distance to this nebula range from 980–1,140 ly (300–350 pc). [4]
