Thomas's rope squirrel or redless tree squirrel [1] (Funisciurus anerythrus) is a species of rodent in the family Sciuridae. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.
In Norse mythology, the squirrel Ratatoskr is a messenger who scurries up and down the trunk of the world-tree Yggdrasil, carrying malicious gossip and insults back and forth between the dragon Níðhöggr, who sits at the bottom of the tree gnawing on its roots, and the hawk Veðrfölnir, who sits at the top of the tree keeping watch.
Pine squirrels, Tamiasciurus species, are small tree squirrels with bushy tails. Along with members of the genus Sciurus, they are members of the Sciurini tribe.. The name Tamiasciurus comes from Greek wiktionary:ταμίας tamías ‘steward, dispenser’ and wiktionary:σκίουρος skíouros 'squirrel'.
Sperry said, “If a pecan tree is free-standing, that is, not touching other trees, power lines, etc., you can put a sheet metal collar in place around its trunk.”
The currently accepted scientific name for Abert's squirrel is Sciurus aberti Woodhouse, 1853. [4] Woodhouse had initially described the species as Sciurus dorsalis in 1852, but this name turned out to be preoccupied by Sciurus dorsalis Gray, 1849 (now a subspecies of variegated squirrel S. variegatoides), and thus the present species was renamed.
Sciurinae (/ s ɪ ˈ j uː r ɪ n eɪ /) is a subfamily of squirrels (in the family Sciuridae), uniting the flying squirrels with certain related tree squirrels. Older sources [1] [2] place the flying squirrels in a separate subfamily (Pteromyinae) and unite all remaining sciurids into the subfamily Sciurinae, but this has been strongly refuted by genetic studies.
