Joseph Mason, (January 28, 1840 [2] – February 1881 [1]) was an explorer, business man, law man, and early settler of the Colorado Territory [2] He is best known as the "Father of Fort Collins, Colorado".

The formation is a prominent landmark of the nearby city of Fort Collins and often used as a symbol of that city, appearing in the official city seal. The name comes from its distinctive appearance.
