"Ants Marching" is a song by American rock group Dave Matthews Band. It was released in September 1995 as the second single from their debut studio album Under the Table and Dreaming. It reached #18 on the Billboard Alternative chart and on the Mainstream Rock chart as well. [2] [3] The song was considered a successful hit single.
The song was first recorded on 26 August 1931, as a "vocal chorus" sung by Helen Rowland within a foxtrot played by the Majestic Dance Orchestra. [2] George Hall popularized the song on his radio show, later making it his theme song. Ted Black and His Orchestra, with vocalist Tom Brown, had the first major hit recording of the song in 1931.
The band originally recorded the song with lyrics, but they were removed from the final album cut. The album's title comes from a lyric of the song "Ants Marching": "[He] remembers being small / playing under the table and dreaming". The album was dedicated to Matthews' older sister Anne, who was killed by her husband in 1994 in a murder–suicide.
