The Mohawk and Malone Railway was a railroad that ran from the New York Central Railroad's main line at Herkimer north to Malone, crossing the northern Adirondacks at Tupper Lake Junction, just north of Tupper Lake. The road's founder, Dr. William Seward Webb, was president of the Wagner Palace Car Company and a Vanderbilt in-law.
Also known as the Mohawk and Malone Railway, the Adirondack and St. Lawrence Railroad was built by Dr. William Seward Webb. The line crossed the northern Adirondacks at Tupper Lake Junction, just north of Tupper Lake. Webb began by purchasing the narrow gauge Herkimer, Newport and Poland Railroad, which ran 16 miles from Herkimer to Poland.
The company's route ran from Utica, New York, northeast to Lake Placid. This route was originally opened by the Mohawk and Malone Railway, a predecessor of the New York Central Railroad, in 1892. [2] The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad purchased the line in 1894, and it was merged into the New York Central Railroad in 1913.
The line was built in 1892 by William Seward Webb, a Vanderbilt in-law, [2] as the Mohawk & Malone Railway and was purchased from him in 1893 by the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad. [3] Its successor from 1913, the New York Central Railroad, ran passenger trains on the route until April 24, 1965.
The district includes 23 contributing buildings and 18 contributing structures. It encompasses the former Mohawk and Malone Railway that eventually became the Adirondack Division of the New York Central Railroad in 1913. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. [1]
