Glenwood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States, with a rich musical heritage. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 501. [3] Glenwood is located along U.S. Route 221, 5 miles (8.0 km) south-southeast of Marion.
Glenwood is a historic plantation with a Greek Revival house and several outbuildings, located near Enon, Yadkin County, North Carolina. Tyre Glen or Tyree Glenn (1800–1875) built one of the largest plantations in western North Carolina in Enon. The estate, known as Glenwood, once had 360 slaves and 6,000 acres (24 km 2). [2]

Glenwood was a center for culture in the area. Prominent visitors included Nathan Rudolphus., the son of Sen. Stephen A. Douglas; North Carolina Gov. Zebulon Vance; and North Carolina Chief Justice Richard M. Pearson. In 1863, a company of 50 uninvited Confederate troops of the 8th Battalion Georgia Infantry descended on Glenwood.
The former Daniels House was named Wakestone by Josephus' wife, Addie Worth Bagley Daniels. [4] It stood in a residential area north of downtown Raleigh, on a 3-acre (1.2 ha) landscaped parcel bounded on the east by Glenwood Avenue (United States Route 70), on the south by Wade Avenue, and on the west by Caswell Street, where the main drive entered the property.
It should be noted that there are over 200 antebellum (pre-Civil War period) former plantation homes still standing in North Carolina, most privately owned and not open to the public (with the exception of several house museums and B&B's).
