The Diocese of Erie (Latin: Dioecesis Eriensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory, or diocese, of the Catholic Church in western Pennsylvania in the United States. It is a suffragan diocese of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Diocese of Erie was founded on July 29, 1853. Its mother church is St. Peter's Cathedral in Erie.
It is the seat of the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania. St. Paul's Church was founded on St. Patrick's Day in 1827. [1] The church became the cathedral for the Diocese of Erie on February 21, 1915. [2] The diocese changed its name to Northwestern Pennsylvania in 1981.
Plans for the building of St. Peter Cathedral were initiated in 1873 by Bishop Tobias Mullen of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie.The cornerstone was laid in a formal ceremony held on St. Peter in Chains Day (See General Roman Calendar as in 1954), 1 August 1875.
