Mammoth is a census-designated place [3] that is located in Mount Pleasant Township, Westmoreland County in the state of Pennsylvania, United States, with its own post office and postal zip code: 15664. The community is located just off Pennsylvania Route 982 and is part of the Mount Pleasant Area School District.
The Mammoth mining complex consisted of the Mammoth No. 1 Mine (a shaft mine) and the Mammoth No. 2 Mine (a slope mine). From approximately 1879 to 1889 the Mammoth No. 1 mine was owned by Colonel J.W. Moore Coke Company in Greensburg, PA. In 1889, the mine was purchased by The H. C. Frick Coke Company. The Frick Coke Company sold the mine in 1927.

In 1978, they purchased the bankrupt Mammoth Mart chain. [2] Because of the economic downturn and the debt from the Mammoth purchase, they filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1982. Mammoth Spring, the third largest spring in Pennsylvania, flows at an average of 14,000 gallons per minute through an opening in above ground limestone is located on Honey Creek near Alexander Caverns. Alexander Caverns was used as a show cave from 1926 to 1959. An artificial opening was made to allow tours, boat rides and Cathedral room.
