Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is a malignant tumor of the stomach. It's a cancer that develops from the lining of the stomach . [ 10 ] Most cases of stomach cancers are gastric carcinomas , which can be divided into a number of subtypes, including gastric adenocarcinomas . [ 2 ]
In the United States during 2013–2017, the age-adjusted mortality rate for all types of cancer was 189.5/100,000 for males, and 135.7/100,000 for females. [1] Below is an incomplete list of age-adjusted mortality rates for different types of cancer in the United States from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program.
Cancer of the stomach, also called gastric cancer, is the fourth-most-common type of cancer and the second-highest cause of cancer death globally. [2] Eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia) is a high-risk area for gastric cancer, and North America, Australia, New Zealand and western and northern Africa are areas with low risk. [5]
Primary signet ring cell carcinoma of the colon and rectum (PSRCCR) is rare, with a reported incidence of less than 1 percent. It has a poor prognosis because symptoms often develop late and it is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. Five-year survival rates in previous studies ranged from nine to 30 percent.
Survival rates for most childhood cancers have improved, with a notable improvement in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (the most common childhood cancer). Due to improved treatment, the 5-year survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia has increased from less than 10% in the 1960s to about 90% during the time period 2003-2009.
When gastric cancer is caught early, the five year survival rate is estimated to be around 90%. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] However when diagnosed at an advanced stage, survival falls to less than 30%. Colorectal cancer has demonstrated an increasing incidence in younger populations with the US lifetime risk estimated to be about 4%. [ 6 ]
The chance of survival depends on the type of cancer and extent of disease at the start of treatment. [11] In children under 15 at diagnosis, the five-year survival rate in the developed world is on average 80%. [17] For cancer in the United States, the average five-year survival rate is 66% for all ages. [5]
A subtype of adenocarcinoma, the bronchioloalveolar carcinoma, is more common in female never-smokers, and may have a better long-term survival. [ 13 ] This cancer usually is seen peripherally in the lungs, as opposed to small cell lung cancer and squamous cell lung cancer , which both tend to be more centrally located.
